The Hawaii women’s basketball team lost an opportunity to build on its first early-season tournament championship in nearly a decade by falling at Oregon State on Friday night.
The Rainbow Wahine gradually fell behind in a 76-64 defeat to the Beavers at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore., despite forward Kamilah Jackson’s seventh straight double-double.
Jackson finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Rainbow Wahine (5-4).
Hawaii was coming off a title at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown, which it wrapped up with a 77-71 overtime win against Minnesota of the Big Ten on Dec. 1.
Jackson’s double-double on Friday night was the 50th of her career. She also passed Lynette Liu (1,363 points) for fourth on the UH career scoring list at 1,365.
"That’s what Mia does and I’m very proud of her resolve," Rainbow Wahine coach Laura Beeman said.
"Every night she steps up and puts this team on her back."
Guard Sydney Haydel added 11 points for UH, but no one else cracked double figures. The Wahine were within four, at 36-32, at halftime but dealt with foul trouble and rotation issues early in the second half when the Beavers separated.
UH fell to 1-2 against Pac-12 Conference teams this season, including 0-2 on the road.
OSU (6-2) shot 10-for-16 on 3-pointers — including 5-for-5 by guard Sydney Wiese — making up for 18 Beavers turnovers against just 11 for the Wahine. The hosts also outrebounded UH 46-36.
UH was to spend the night in Corvallis, then head back down to Stockton, Calif., for Sunday’s game at former Big West foe Pacific (4-3).
"The girls know this was a very difficult game, but they know they played hard," Beeman said. "So I know we’ll be ready and fired up for Pacific.
"We haven’t lost back-to-back games all season and we’re not going to start now."
